Plot Summary
A man who was working on a job site in Dubai is recounting the horrors of the experience. There is very little pay and those who are insubordinate towards the Foreman are lifted to the top of a building under construction in a crane and left there. The protagonist tries to keep people safe, but newcomers are often unwilling to listen. Only one person there can read, and he tells everyone the news from home, saving the weakest from hearing the worst news. The protagonist has a wife, but he cares little for her, thinking instead of the woman he loves named Megna who he impregnated before leaving to work here.
The newest guy there, called Pahari, has been taking a shortcut down the Mall of Dubai to get to work, which will most likely end tragically for him. He schmoozes his way into a free showing at the new movie theater and has started dating a perfume saleswoman working in one of the shops.
The protagonist asks the foreman for an advance on his paycheck as his brother back home in Bangladesh needs an operation. The foreman beats him because he thinks he's being blackmailed.
Later, the foreman comes to the group saying he needs people to clean the windows for the big opening of the building. He'll pay extra if they do it because it's so dangerous and there's no safety mechanisms. The protagonist goes along with Pahari who wants the money for a real date with his girlfriend. They are lowered down on a small balcony and come up one floor at a time, cleaning windows. The wind grows as they get higher, until it's too strong and is blowing sand all over them. The balcony swings wildly and Pahari is thrown overboard. The protagonist is paid off because lots of important people saw how dangerous it was. Instead of fighting for the others like he is asked to, the protagonist leaves, wanting to give his son a proper life and marry the woman he loves.
