Sten, a retired man on a cruise vacation with his wife, Carolee, is on a bus for a day trip nature walk. The sun, heat, and day drinking have dehydrated him to the point of giving him a headache.
He holds narrow-minded reflections about the city around him before reaching for Carolee’s bag for some water. He starts complaining about the driver – the speed and discomfort of the bumpy road – and decides to walk to the front of the bus to request slower driving. The man has headphones in and does not hear his initial request. Sten gets more frustrated and irritated, pulling out one of his earbuds, only to get brushed off and told they were almost there.
By then, Sten really needs to use the restroom. He drifts into memories of owning an aquarium years ago and his mood improves.
The bus arrives and the driver tells the tourists they have two hours to explore. Sten buys a Diet Coke from a shop and relieves himself in the undergrowth behind the stall.
Then, three men arrive in a car, armed with knives and a gun, and tell the tourists to empty their valuables. Sten moves forward, noticing they are amateurs, and his ex-Marine training kicks in. He grabs the man with the gun and chokes him to death. The other two robbers run back to the car and escape. The dead body is placed on the ground, CPR initiated, and the retirees ask for the nearest hospital. Sten starts getting nervous about local authorities’ responses when a woman from the group comes up and calls him a hero. The tourists start gathering their possessions.
