Plot Summary
Joe Ditto has been instructed by his boss Whitey to kill Johnny Sovereign. Before starting the job, Joe cleans his apartment, gathering his dirty laundry before taking it to be washed. While cleaning, Joe finds a small box containing his collection of photographs of women's breasts. The pictures are all of women he's slept with, including Whitey's girlfriend. Also in the box are letters from Capri, a woman who he once slept with and now misses terribly. Joe doesn't have any photos of her breasts, but he has other nude photos of her. Joe remembers when he had the pictures developed, and the employee at Walgreens had tried to steal some of them, causing Joe to kick him and crack his kneecap. For several days, Joe does various drugs before driving to Johnny's street and waiting for his target to come home. Each day, however, one of the women he's slept with approaches his car, and each time he hooks up with them back at his apartment instead of finishing his job. The fourth time this happens, Capri approaches his car flirtatiously. Joe remembers the last time they'd seen each other, before she disappeared, leaving no way for him to contact her. Before she can get in the car, Joe speeds forward, hitting a pedestrian in the process. When Johnny gets home, Joe convinces him to give him a ride in his new car. They soon turn onto a quiet street, and Joe tells Johnny he wants to talk business, explaining that Whitey believes Johnny has been cheating them out of money and keeping it for himself. Johnny denies this, saying he has always been fair and kept detailed records, but while they are still talking, Joe pulls out a knife and stabs Johnny in the chest. To make sure he is dead, Joe shoots him with his shotgun before he leaves. Joe then goes to the Zip Inn, which is owned by a veteran named Zip who lost his right arm in the war. Sitting with Zip at the bar is Teo, a former lucha libre wrestler. Now, Teo keeps pigeons in a pigeon coop on the roof of his apartment building. One day about a month ago, Lefty Antic, who practices his saxophone on the same roof, notices a note attached to the leg of one of the pigeons. Written on the note is one word: marlin. Teo is unsure what the message means, but the next day, Lefty gives him a wad of cash, having bet on a horse named Merlin in harness racing and won. Another note arrives the next day, and after cracking the code, Lefty and Teo are successful once again. After receiving the third note, Teo gives a thousand dollars to Lefty, who goes to place their bets with Johnny Sovereign. The next day, however, Teo discovers that the horse they chose has lost, and Teo goes to Lefty's apartment only to find it deserted and the saxophone player nowhere to be found. During this time, Teo begins to have strange dreams. In one, he has sex with his cousin Alaina who bites his nipples, and he is sore when he wakes up the next day. In another, he dreams that he loses a wrestling match, and his shirt is torn off by his opponent, revealing breasts leaking milk. Teo had once been approached by his cousin after a match. He kept his mask on the whole time they were together, even while the two had sex in his trailer. When he was later defeated and his opponent removed his mask revealing his identity, Alaina was in the crowd, and he never saw her again after that day. Teo's pigeons continue to come home with notes, but Teo, unsure of what they mean, only saves the notes in a box and no longer places any bets. A few hours before Teo meets Joe Ditto at Zip's bar, Teo receives a message that says murder in Spanish. When Teo arrives at Zip's bar, Zip asks him about his wrestling career and persuades him to wear his old mask. Joe arrives soon after and buys drinks for Zip and Teo, who is still wearing his mask. Teo begins to grow irritated however, when Joe teases him for looking like a Marvel character and remarks that his chest looks like a woman's breasts. The men then notice shouting from the TV, as a man runs onto the field of a baseball game. Teo recognizes the man as Lefty Antic, and Zip and Joe add that they know him too and that Lefty is a former boxer. Joe then challenges Teo to an arm wrestling match. While the two arm wrestle, sirens begin to wail from outside, and Joe gropes Teo's chest.
