Despite his best intentions, Frank Kellerman and his son Curly have had a difficult relationship ever since Kellerman told him to stop hanging around the crazy woman who lives next door. This “Crow Woman” lost her husband soon after their marriage, and since then has believed she is a bird. After Kellerman’s over-protectiveness gets his son sprayed by a skunk, he tries to salvage their relationship by buying Curly a dog, and the two go out in the woods hunting every day. One day, when Kellerman goes out into the woods to find them, he sees Curly pretending to be a bird with the Crow Woman. He startles them, and the woman falls off the cliff to her death, which makes Curly withdraw again. Kellerman resolves to talk to his son about what happened, but puts it off until a few days later, when Curly’s dog gets hit by a car in the road. Later that night, Kellerman’s wife wakes up to find her husband and son out by where the dog died, pretending to be dogs themselves.
