Plot Summary
The day opens with John playing Guildenstern in the Shakespearean play, Hamlet. As he performs, an alien invasion occurs where aliens announce that the world has been on a natural time loop and will be for six million years and will be observed by the aliens. After this announcement, the aliens leave and the play continues until it ends. John returns home, takes notes of his surroundings, and then wakes up. For the next few days, John wakes up, has sex with his wife, makes breakfast, his wife leaves him for another actor, proceeds to insult him, and then leaves the home. Then John performs his role as Guildenstern and goes home. The second day of the loop, John slaps his wife instead of just letting her go. This catches the attention of the aliens, who briefly appear as beams of light in the apartment before departing. The aliens briefly mentioned that they give humans about a two hour window of each day where events will not loop. John wants to wake up earlier than his usual time the next day in order to experience the pre-loop time. John wakes up around 6:30am and interacts with the locals. He asks the locals about how to resist the aliens' voices. He touches an alien-like pole and uses that to communicate with the aliens. He realizes that around 8:00am, the loop starts. The next day, he meets a woman named Amy Schechter at the train station. Amy talks about how her loop includes her getting on the train and then dying in a train crash. She considers herself an immortal ghost because she dies every day. John buys her a donut. The next two days, John experiences the loop again. However on the latter day, his friend who plays Horatio calls him and says he's going to do something horrible. As he returns home after the play, John notices subtle changes in the streets. Cars are in different places, things go missing, and other changes. The following day, John encourages Amy to try something new when the train crashes such as jumping out of the window. He kisses her and then continues to his loop. John realizes he can somewhat alter the loop and goes to speak to the aliens about it. Influenced by his love for Amy and willingness to change this loop and fight back, John argues with the alien. John's loop starts over again.
