Plot Summary
Three siblings, Edward, Miriam, and Louise, return to their hometown for their father’s funeral. They all share a troubled past and a dislike for their hometown and their father, as they had been part of a child abuse scandal when they were young that had rocked the town and caused pain and suffering for all those involved. The siblings reminisce about their difficult father, and how uncaring and violent he was. They head to a local antique store to see if the people there might be interested in buying some of the things from their father’s house. At the store, Miriam finds a pile of old photographs. She recognizes one of their childhood classmates in one of the pictures, a graphic photo where an adult seems to be abusing him. The siblings look through the photos and find pictures of all their classmates, including themselves, in various states of distress and abuse. Edward is photographed with blood on his mouth, and Miriam and Louise are pictured in similarly shocking states. Edward thinks back to what happened to them as children. When the three siblings were in elementary school, their first-grade teacher and her disabled son were accused of habitually abusing the children in their school. The rumors about this abuse traveled through the town, though nobody knows where they originated. Edward speculates that they started because of the teacher’s son, Phillip, and his disability. Police questioned all the children, including Edward, Miriam, and Louise about the abuse, but asked leading questions and pressured them to provide information that the children knew was a lie. Edward thinks about the “story” he told police officers about Phillip. The siblings grapple with the fact that they never remembered being abused, and that they don’t know why they told made-up stories to the police, yet have found these frightening photos. Their teacher later died in prison, and Phillip disappeared without a trace. The siblings go to view their father’s body, and Edward thinks about the time they spent living together in the basement of their father’s house. Their parents fought often, and they enjoyed the escape of the basement. However, as time went on, all three of them started to feel a haunting presence there. A rotting smell, cold gusts of wind, and unearthly noises kept them up at night, and Miriam even felt a creature sucking on her foot one night. Edward thinks about how this could have been Phillip’s spirit punishing them for their lies. They visit their father’s house, but find it uncomfortable and scary. The siblings decide to stay at a motel for the night, and the next day, attend the funeral. When they go to the cemetery to see their father’s grave, one of their old classmates, Carolyn, is there. They talk about what they all went through, and speculate about what happened to Phillip. Louise shows Carolyn the photos, but she is unfazed. She says that she thinks this will all end soon when everybody involved passes away or moves on. The four of them walk over to their teacher’s old house and look out over the empty property.
