A Spacer, an androgynous astronaut, roams the world with his group of friends. Spacers are a group of humans who were neutered before they underwent puberty so that their gametes would not be destroyed by space radiations. They prostitute themselves out to the frelks, people who are attracted to their androgyny.
When the Spacer goes on a walk by himself in Istanbul, he meets Yuri Pasha, a young art student frelk. The Spacer tries to arrange sex with her, but Yuri refuses, stating that she doesn’t want to treat the Spacer as horribly as everyone else treats him. She’s kind to him and shows him her home, refuses her money repeatedly, and hopes that he can find a better way to live his life. They part ways. Instead of heeding her advice, he meets up with his friends to continue their world tour.
