Plot Summary
Delwood was robbing the convenience store that Louise worked at when the two met. Now they are lovers, and Delwood continues to attempt to make a life for them through thieving. This doesn't bother Louise- she was cool and calm as Delwood robbed her, flirting and stealthily giving him her number out of sight of the security cameras- she is used to this life. What grates on her is his frugality. Each time Louise expresses a desire for something nice, Delwood dismisses it as unnecessary extravagance: a nicer car without a painful spring poking out of the seat, a nice steak dinner at a local inn, a meaningful painting Delwood was in a position to steal, or a kitschy $30 sock monkey keychain. With Delwood denying her all of these simple pleasures, Louise begins to think Delwood may never take them anywhere meaningful in their lives, and that maybe he doesn't care about her enough to do so. After their last big heist, where they rob the gallery that had Louise's meaningful painting, they skip town. Louise encounters the sock monkey keychain that she wants and challenges Delwood to buy it for her. She does this to prove he would be willing to spend thirty dollars on her for something that seems meaningless. Louise proposes a hypothetical- that the monkey has significance because it is similar to a monkey doll that her father gave her before he exited her life forever as a child. Delwood seems to miss the point, and Louise storms away. Later on as they arrive at an inn, Louise slips Delwood's pistol into her purse. She plans on either leaving him and taking part of the stolen money or killing him if he tries to keep her by force. Before she gets the chance to say the words to him, Delwood seems to have noticed the missing gun, and decides to communicate with Louise. He tells her that he stole the painting for her. He planned to use the down payment on a house in California. But most importantly to Louise, he had bought the sock monkey keychain. Her needs satisfied, she decides not to kill him.
