Plot Summary
A man, Simon, walks his dog Arnie twice a day through the north side of the heath and runs into a new man who he has only seen once before. The man sits next to Simon on a bench and Simon eyes the man’s dog which is disfigured — though his own dog Arnie doesn’t seem to notice the new dog at all. Simon notes the new dogs’ eyes which seem to be very human and mimicking a lonely rage. The stranger introduces himself as Emile and the two part ways. As Simon walks away he runs into a seemingly angry woman who ignores Simon and begins to wag her finger at Emile. The next day Simon decides to walk on the south side of the heath, hoping to avoid Emile, but he sees Emile again this time talking to a large man in a tracksuit. He carefully avoids him and as he is walking away he once again sees the woman approaching Emile. His next walk he decides to walk next to the marsh and considers the fact that Emile must walk normally on the south side and had changed to the north side one day which caused the woman to come after him. He returns to the north side the following day and runs into Emile after a while, who invites him to come to his shop that he has in town. Simon notices Emile’s dog stepping on his toes and as Emile and the dog depart Arnie is gone. Simon spends the rest of the day looking for him, but to no avail, however he does run into the woman again who tells him not to go to the shop. He assumes that it is possible that Emile took Arnie and so he goes to the shop anyway, which lies in a darkened alley in town. He opens the door of the shop and sees the man in a tracksuit in a trance as well as the disfigured dog. He is pulled out of the shop by the woman who tells him to never return and that Simon was lucky that she was there. Simon decides to return anyway.
