Plot Summary
Charlie Render is a middle-aged doctor who specializes in the psychology of the mind and dreams. His occupation requires him to look into people's minds and understand their dreams and aspirations. He uses an egg-shaped mechanism to manipulate the dream scape of individuals who sit inside of it. This allows him to see what they are thinking about and their true desires. Dr. Render calls it a ro-womb.
In a dream, he assassinates Marcus Antonius and proceeds to turn the Roman court against Julius Caesar. Caesar weeps because he wants to be assassinated. At the end of the dream, Render pushes some buttons and releases a man named Erikson. Erikson is a high-ranked representative who, according to Render, wants to be either loved or hated. He seeks attention and also believes there to be someone who wants to assassinate him. Render explains that this feeling is due to Erikson's want to have someone pay attention to him. Erikson thanks the doctor and then leaves.
Render begins to think about his life. He has a ten-year-old son that writes letters to him and a lover named Jill Deville. After work, Render books a table at his favorite club. He remembers to call Miss DeVille before he heads out. His car drives itself to the club and Render goes to his table. However, a waiter comes by and explains that another doctor--Doctor Shallot wants to see him. Doctor Shallot is blind so Render goes up to their table. He soon realizes she is a woman and she invites him to sit with her.
He is shocked to find that she went through medical school being blind. They both order food off of the menu and she talks about how she has always wanted to see. He agrees to use his occupation to create a dreamscape and show her the things in it. It's not going to heal her sight, but it will help her envision things. Dr. Eileen Shallot talks about her guide dog who talks and helps her around. Render offers to drive her around in his self-driving car and he talks about the logistics of such cars, especially their concept of blindspin (which allows the cars to drive themselves around and then returning to where they left).
The two doctors talk about the snow and she asks him to describe their surroundings to her. He begins describing things he has seen, such as paintings and dreamscapes, and at first she claims they are not real things. Eventually they share a kiss and depart.
A suicide happens in the morning and it bothers Dr. Render throughout the whole day. His secretary asks him about the logistics of it. Render goes to talk with his wife, who brings up their child, Peter. Peter broke his ankle recently and his wife thinks about changing his school again. Miss Deville then asks to meet at St. Moritz and he argues that he'd rather go to Davos. Render walks around his office and thinks about the suicide some more. A little while later, his wife calls again and they argue about where to go once more.
At Dr. Shallot's first appointment, she brings her guide dog named Sigmund. Sigmund seems skeptical of Render's practice. Render puts Eileen Shallot into the egg machine and begins to create her dreamscape based off of colors she has seen before. Sigmund tries to enter the egg with her, but Dr. Render tells him he cannot. As Dr. Shallot walks around the dreamscape, she asks Render to appear in his natural form and show her around. He points out landforms and other things in her presence. He can tell she feels joy because of it.
After the session, Render answers a phone call, reminisces on an old photo of him and his family, and then meets his wife to watch a dancing robot show. She asks him to watch it again and they do. Render and his wife take a tour of a church, which she enjoys but he does not. They talk about their travel plans and eventually Render sees an old friend of his named Maurice Bartelmetz. They talk about Render's work and about his newest client, Dr. Shallot. Maurice warns Render of the issues with showing Dr. Shallot this dreamscape and that if she gets anxiety, it will cause problems in scape.
Later on, Jill goes to meet up with Maurice and she explains that she is afraid of the connection being made between Dr. Shallot and Render. She asks Maurice to ask Render to drop the case with Dr. Shallot.
The next client that Dr. Render has is a man with a dog named Bismark. Bismark is similar to Sigmund, but he is trained to hunt large animals. After work, Render impulse buys a cuckoo clock.
Dr. Shallot sits in her office, which has many flowers and smells of perfume. She thinks about what she has seen in her appointments and then receives a phone call from Dr. Render, asking her to dinner. Later, they talk about the dog he met that was similar to Sigmund and they explore all of the seasons in her dreamscape. He then shows her many different places like banks, drugstores, and schools. He then takes her to the club they met and shows her food, which somewhat overwhelms her. They drink alcohol in the dreamscape.
Later, Dr. Render receives another letter from his son talking about his life and school so far. Jill calls the institute where Dr. Shallot works and schedules an appointment with her for the next week.
One day at work, Dr. Render is told he has a visitor. The visitor is Dr. Shallot's dog, Sigmund. Sigmund explains that Dr. Shallot has been sick and won't respond to him. Sigmund drives the car back to their home and Render talks to Dr. Shallot who claims she is not sick and that Sigmund is not supposed to be driving the car. Sigmund insists that she is unwell and acting strange. He initially blames Dr. Render for making her sick, but then appreciates that Dr. Render might heal her. Render makes Dr. Shallot some coffee.
Dr. Shallot and Dr. Render go back into the dreamscape. He realizes that she has the ability to manipulate his mind in some way. She hears music coming from the cathedral in her dreamscape and asks to go listen to it. She offers him a drink and he refuses. Suddenly, Render has difficulty waking from the dreamscape. She continues to offer him the goblet to drink. He asks Dr. Shallot who he is and she explains that he is Render, the Shaper. Render shouts that he hates her and suddenly she disappears. He hears a howl and a wolf named Fenris pounces on him and begins to eat him, but he kills the wolf.
A voice tells him to drink and he does. He tries to run and leave the dreamscape but the world around him won't allow him to. He tries to banish the evil demons he assumes are around him but nothing works. An individual named Thaumiel reaches towards him and he joins it in the darkness.
Mr. Erikson asks to see Dr. Render, but his secretary says that it's impossible. A knight goes down a tower and tells him that ship is in the harbor. The knight says the ship has black sails, but they end up being white. They argue about the color of the sails. A red button appears and he pushes it. Everything goes black.
