Plot Summary
Patrol Sergeant Ben Martin, Patrol Trooper Clay Ferguson, and Medical-Surgical Officer Kelly Lightfoot will be patrolling segments of North of America for the next 11 months. The Continental Thruway System became necessary as vehicles developed to be so fast and powerful that new roads had to be built. The three of them get in their giant patrol vehicle, named Beulah, and depart on their first assignment. They speed to the first accident they are directed to – a side swipe. At the wreckage, Kelly works on saving an inert woman, Ben directs traffic around the crash, and Clay works on extracting victims from the wreckage. The two trapped victims do not survive. The woman is transferred to an ambulance, a hospital-like vehicle. They realize that the vehicle that caused the accident has gotten away and communicate the information they know to Control so that a hunt for justice can begin. Ben stops an old car full of kids that is stopped on the road. They tow the car and call the wrecker to get rid of the car. Ben tells Clay he has to be strict with the kids and give them a citation because if he does not, the driver will do something reckless again. Next, Ben stops a car that is driving unsafely only to find out that a man is rushing his wife to the hospital. Kelly helps deliver the baby and the new family is taken to the nearest hospital. The next morning, as they are eating breakfast, they get news of the escaped hit-and-run car, which had since then committed a robbery and murder. Beulah closes in and then Kelly spots it. Four other patrol cars start forming roadblocks, three others move in to create cover. The chased car loses control as it angles off the road; the man inside dies as the car goes up in flames. The patrol car heads to the Wichita barracks for repairs.
