Plot Summary
Kristine makes breakfast for her husband Noel after he returns from a trip to the Northwest Territory of Canada. The night before he had bitten her during sex, leaving a mark on her shoulder, but she doesn’t think too much about it. As she goes to work she realizes that the bite is throbbing. She returns home in the evening and finds Noel unmoved and sitting in front of his computer. He is working on translating and compiling audio recordings he recorded of the native people in the area he visited. She thinks he hasn’t eaten anything all day, but doesn’t make too much out of the fact. That night, as they begin to have sex again, he bites her again and she asks him to stop, but he doesn’t at first. She shoves him off of her and he apologizes and decides to sleep in the study.
The next morning she calls her mom and tells her that Noel has been acting weird. Her mom says that he is probably just adjusting from being trapped in a snowstorm in the Arctic and that he should get better soon. Krisitne goes for a swim, goes to work, and then returns home again to find Noel still slumped over his computer listening to the recordings, with the window open. It is snowing outside and so the room is very cold. She realizes he still hasn’t eaten anything and she questions him about it, but he avoids the question. She reminds him that he only called her once during his trip and that it was out of delirium after returning from the storm. During the call she told him she was pregnant, but he says he doesn’t remember what she told him. He says he doesn’t remember much of the storm and she tells him that he told her that he had gotten trapped in the snow outside of the village. There he had seen a tall, skinny, old man. Kristine says that his brain must’ve been making it up, but Noel seems to remember that part very clearly. He says that he has to finish listening to his recordings and find a specific one he was looking for.
As the days go on Noel still sleeps in the study, saying that he might have caught a bug while he was away and doesn’t want to get her sick. She begins to stay late at work, not wanting to see him. One night she awakes to the sounds of the apartment door closing and she searches the apartment, but can’t find Noel. She dresses and walks outside and finds Noel naked in the snow. It is freezing and she assumes that he must have been sleep walking. She gets him back inside and leaves before he wakes up. She calls her mom that day asking her to move closer and almost tells her about being pregnant, but decides against it.
When she returns home she tells Noel that she has booked him an appointment to see a counselor, but he doesn’t seem interested. He seems abnormally skinny and the apartment is very cold. She spends the next day researching what might be wrong with him, but can’t find anything. When she gets home, Noel is gone, but his computer is left in the study. She opens it up and finds a recording open and a translation alongside it. It talks about a wendigo and the curse that it puts upon people who it saves from the cold. Noel appears in the room and Kristine questions him about the recording. She says he is making it up, but he bites his own hand and shows how black oozes from it and then the wound heals itself. Suddenly his face contorts and he lunges at Kristine. She evades him and locks him in the study with her back to the door. He tells her through the door that he went to the hospital and the morgue to try to feed on someone, but that he was unsuccessful. He says that if he doesn’t eat someone soon he is going to die.
The next morning she prepares a bag full of ice and a knife. She calls her mom and asks her about how her mom would’ve done anything to get Kristine’s dad back after he died. She hangs up and knows that she has to help her husband and prepares to cut off her own finger.
