Plot Summary
A man walks down the same road to work every morning. One day, as he crosses the bridge over the river, he accidentally drops his phone into the muddy river below. He looks over the edge of the bridge and sees a female-seeming creature looking up at him from the mud. She retrieves his phone, and they have a short conversation. The man finds her funny and charming and thanks her for her help. The next day, the man returns to the bridge to see if the creature is still there. She is, and they discuss her life under the bridge. The man continues to chat with her daily on his morning walk.
One day, the man clambers down the bridge's side to bring the creature a coffee. He feels struck by her and wants to learn more about who she is. He tells her his name, Adam, but she won't tell him hers. However, she does reveal that she is a bridge troll.
Adam continues to meet the troll every day for morning coffee. They grow closer, and he tells her about life up above on the road. She is extremely curious about what goes on in the world above, and he enjoys telling her stories and describing the landscapes he sees every day. The troll tells him how lucky he is to be able to experience the world. Adam tells her about the good things on the road, like the flowers, and she says that one of the good things on the road is him, which makes Adam's heart flutter.
One day, as Adam lies in the mud beside her, the troll touches him for the first time. She pulled herself out of the dirt and onto the ground near him, which Adam thought looked painful. He tells her to return, and she hides away from him in a dark part of the river. He apologizes and tells her that a tragedy happened on the road that day. She asks him to explain why it occurred, but he can't. He leaves, upset.
Adam soon returns to the river with coffee and apologizes again. He tries to tell her more about what happened on the road but cries. The troll comforts him.
The next time he visits her, Adam tells the troll that he could share his excellent life on the road with her. He begs her to come with him, but she refuses, saying she is a bridge troll and cannot have any other way of life. Adam cries as he leaves.
As the days pass, Adam returns to the bridge with coffee each morning. However, the bridge troll is gone. Adam finds no trace of her despite looking all around the bridge. He even tries dropping his phone into the river again but sees nothing. Eventually, the road and the bridge disappear, and the river grows larger. Adam keeps coming down to the river to look for the troll, even though it seems like she will never return.
Finally, one day, Adam sees her in the distance. He reaches out for her, and they hold each other closely. She kisses him before letting go.
