Time moves differently for Makeisha. In what seems like a split second to her mother, friend, or husband, Makeisha can travel back to the past, whether that be leading a pirate's ship or serving as queen of Bavaria. While her thousands of lifetimes has given her knowledge and experiences way beyond her present years, Makeisha struggles to stay grounded in the present reality, often involuntarily time-traveling in the middle of a conversation, only returning to it after a lifetime or a self-murder. The price the present-day Makeisha has to pay is hefty. Her history teachers believe her corrections to history to be attention-seeking. Her friend Philippa believes she is building a fake identity. Her marriage to Carl ends in divorce.
One day, Makeisha goes to a museum. There, she finds relics of her past life of being queen of Bavaria. However, the placard in the museum asserts that this queen was in fact a king. Makeisha is shocked to find her legacy erased, and there is nobody there to believe her.
In the solitude of the present-day, Makeisha realizes the present has nothing for her. She reaches out her hand and brings forth the future.
