Plot Summary
Aaron and Leroy are fishing for sharks. Though Aaron struggles from inexperience, the two of them eventually catch one and many more. Leroy gives Aaron $50 after they sell the meat. Aaron gets better over the course of the year. At the end of the year, Leroy brings a girl named Leah to the boat. She is coming along with them on their outings. At the end of the week, after Leroy and Aaron catch a shark, Leah comes up from the below deck cabin to see it. She looks at it momentarily then quickly returns to the cabin. During the second month of Leah’s stay on board, Aaron and Leroy do not manage to catch many sharks and so Leroy goes away for a while to do a job for Ortiz. While Leroy is away, Leah expresses her hatred for Leroy and seduces Aaron. One day Leroy arrives and sees Leah lying nude and Aaron quickly trying to get dressed. When he asks what's happening, Leah lies and says that Aaron raped her. Leroy then punches Aaron. Afterward, Aaron and Leroy do not talk to each other except when necessary during their outings. During one outing, they catch hold of a very large shark. Eventually, they kill it, but they realize they are unable to get it onto the boat. Then Aaron has the idea to cut it up. This plan works. At port, Aaron and Leroy, having rekindled their friendship, celebrate their catch by drinking rum. During their celebration, Leah collects her things from the boat and leaves.
