A twelve-year-old boy stands in a panic room of sorts with his father. His father explains that the room is intended to keep their mother restrained and inside, to keep the two of them safe. The mother undergoes sporadic transformations that make her into a killing whirlwind of violence and venom. The room has restraints, cameras, mics, twelve-inch thick steel walls, and one final fail safe: a lethal gas set to release on a timer unless one of them sets it back. The boy has grown up his whole life with this routine and has become accustomed to it, though, as he gets older, he wonders if the same transformation will wreak him as well. His parents answer him honestly, saying that they don't know and won't know until he undergoes puberty.
One night, he wakes up to find his father in the control room part of the panic room, panicking more than normal. Throwing procedure to the wind, the father enters the panic room, telling him not to open the door unless he sees his wave on the monitors. Once sealed inside, the cameras cut out and the boy hears radio silence from the intercom. He waits several hours, seeing the timer count down, meanwhile, his mother tries to convince him to open the door to help his father, who has been injured. The boy is unrelenting, letting the timer continue to tick down, and resolving himself not to reset it; however, as the timer clicks down, he decides that he will open the door. Unsealing the panic room, he opens his arms wide, ready to embrace whatever beholds him.
