Plot Summary
In a dystopian New Orleans, Lalji trades calories for kinetic energy. Lalji plans to use the energy to propel a boat north with his companions Shriram and Creo to bring a high-profile man, who knows how to make calories, into their underwhelming kinetics business. Creo does not know that the calorie man is wanted by the major calorie companies, like AgriGen. Big companies are willing to kill the 'calorie man' for his information. IP men and dogs working for companies like AgriGen patrol the water systems to make sure that no one is smuggling calories. Lalji claims he is an antique dealer and that is why he is traveling. As they travel, the crew prays to Hindu Gods and talks about old India. Lalji reminiscences a girl, Gita, that he left behind and is probably dead due to him leaving to pursue calorie profit. Gita is presumably his sister. The crew arrives in a wrecked suburb where the major calorie companies all have crop fields. They make their way to the civil center where they wander around until approached by a man. The man is Charles Bowman, the calorie man, and generipper. As they greet Bowman, Lalji thinks again about Gita. He feels guilty that he abandoned her to follow his own monetary pursuits in the calorie industry. Lalji's guilt is a driving factor in this mission to overthrow the calorie monopoly by utilizing Bowman's research. Lalji thinks that Shriram invited him because of their shared humanitarian interest in overthrowing the monopoly. They follow Bowman outside and see remnants of real food and plants. Bowman encourages them to try it as it will die now that the crew likely brought infections to the plants. They go inside a building to get Bowman’s luggage. There is a computer with his information, cases of food, and a frail girl called Tazi. They do not want to take Tazi along, but Bowman insists they do as he used her in his work and has an obligation to protect her. Creo and Shriram are okay with bringing Tazi, but Lalji is against it. Bowman asks what the added risk is if they bring the girl as many people in the calorie industry want to kill him. This is news to Creo who has been ignorant to most of the happenings on this mission. It is revealed to Creo that Bowman can make calories and pirate products of the calorie industry to break the calorie monopoly. Creo realizes this mission isn’t exactly about getting rich. They finally all agree. In the morning, they all leave on the boat with the computer and jars of food and crops. Bowman reveals the secret of his plant is that it can self-pollinate, unlike the industrial crops. Therefore, the crop will spread and grow rapidly. It is also unpatentable and cannot become part of a capitalist agenda. During the night they are stopped by IP men. Everyone is killed, including the IP men, except for Lalji and Tazi. Tazi reveals that the food and crops in the jars brought by Bowman are the seeds that he engineered. They will continue the plan of spreading the seeds and unraveling the calorie monopoly together.
