One day while on a run-of-the-mill task with Deputy Barnes, Sheriff Dalton encounters a supernatural being. Having killed four men before showing up, the officers are taken aback by the sheer gore it is capable of. The demons, coined bloodfaces, are undead creatures that take over the bodies of humans through a ritual, after which they feed on human bodies and wreak havoc.
Months into the apocalypse brought on by the bloodfaces, Barnes and Dalton are trying with no success to find a cure for the quickly spreading phenomenon. Studying up on the literature, Barnes believes he's found a way, but Dalton has lost hope and is in pursuit of survival, not heroism. Regardless, Barnes does what he can to combat the demons, eventually driving himself mad in his desire to do so. When Dalton returns to their shelter one night, he hears Barnes murmuring and using a knife. He realizes that Barnes must be using the ritual that summons the bloodfaces in an attempt to face them. Bursting into the room, Dalton shoots Barnes, saying that he'd warned him not to give in to the demons.
Taking Barnes' body out to be burned, Dalton tries and fails to ignite the body on account of the heavy rainfall. While trying to burn Barnes, Dalton notices something off in the distance and comes to discover that three bloodfaces have found him.
