Plot Summary
Menino and Vida live in a futuristic alternate Korea on Earth in the aftermath of a World War III in which the world's black and brown people were once sent across the solar system as low-wage laborers and settlers. Vida is a refugee from Venus, where a significant amount of the African diaspora lives, and is attempting to return to earth. The two attempt to save funds by busking and dancing on the street. A giant rat attacks them on the subway at Chungmuro Station, and as Vida is about to be mauled by the rat, she summons a giant steel cube (a sculpture by the famous artist Tony Smith) and launches it at the rat, killing it.
The two visit the Black Light District (BLD) of Itaewon and meet Ji-Hoon at a ship repair shop to let him repair Vida's ship. Vida gives Menino a necklace made of oridium, stolen by her father, that allows her to summon matter from other points in space, in case Menino gets into trouble. Menino attempts to use the necklace as practice and accidentally summons a real ship from the arcade game Galaga. The two go to a seedy bar to drink. While gambling with American officers, Menino and Vida get into a fight. Vida uses her powers to summon an Easter Island sculpture to break up the fight. The two leave the bar and Vida tells Menino to return to his family. After a brief reunion with his family, Menino rushes back to Vida to save her from Louco.
Meanwhile, the cyborg owner of the giant rat, Cachorro Louco travels to the scene of the rat incident. Louco works on behalf of the Venutian Empire as a bounty hunter assigned to capture Vida. Louco goes to Ji-Hoon's repair shop and accosts Ji-Hoon for information on Vida's whereabouts to retrieve the summoning necklace. Beaten, Ji-Hoon sees his brother Tae (Menino) on the television, in a missing child announcement, which surprises Ji-Hoon, who did not know he had run away from home. Louco finds Vida outside a club and confronts her, recounting how she killed Vida's father, but Vida is able to escape on foot.
Vida, Louco, and Menino intersect in the streets. Menino summons terra cotta warriors to fight Louco's regenerated oridium giant rat monster. As Louco is about to end Menino, Menino passes the necklace to Vida, who uses it to summon a stone sculpture of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. The police come, and Vida is captured to return to Venus. Menino goes back to his regular daily school life, with hopes to take Vida's crashed ship to visit Vida after her release so they can go on their promised trip to Mars.
