In the city of Chelm lives a large population of Jewish people who have been left undisturbed for generations until a war broke out. Prior to, the people within, led by Gronam Ox, had been living simple lives with varying degrees of devotion to their religion. Their religion, split into two groups, was comprised of the Students of the Mekyl, who were relaxed about their devotion, whereas the Mahmir Hasidim were pious and stern. When the war came to Chelm, the invaders built a wall in one section, creating the ghettos of Chelm. Soon, the people decided that they must abandon their home for their safety, so they packed essentials and went on their way to a train that had been built nearby.
Packing themselves into a train car, they are able to escape the destruction and death that soon plagues Chelm. Mendel, the grandson of Gronam, finds himself huddled in a train car with his fellow Mahmirs. By exploring it, he discovers that there are circus workers on board and that their destination is to their next show. The Mahmirs decide to embrace their new roles, so as not to alert anyone to their true identities and choose to become tumblers. They practice day and night in the train, perfecting their routine. Meanwhile, Mendel gets tips and supplies from the next car over, filled with real performers. Once they arrive, they are put on first, and though their performance isn't bad, the audience complains that it is too short, urging the group to go on with their Jewish ballet. They hesitantly oblige.
