Plot Summary
Martin enters a satanist cult known as the Candlelight Society at the age of 24. There he meets Alice, the daughter of Abel, the priest and leader of the cannibalistic cult known as the Buried Church, and the two quickly fall in love. Sharing their love of Satan, their hope is to journey into hell, marry, and live the rest of their lives together. Thus, Martin poisons his entire cult and takes the place of his former leader to travel to hell and partake in a cannibalistic feast with the devil. Martin now finds himself on an island in the Caribbean, accompanied by the one man, Gully, who knows of his slaughter; however, Gully agrees to keep quiet as long as he gets paid. Meeting with the pirate Captain Toussaint, Martin lies that his leader has fallen ill and sent him in his place, and with enough money, Toussaint is willing to waive his suspicions of Martin; regardless, he will need a representative from the Candlelight Society to get into hell. While in the Caribbean, they meet with a trader named Thomas who provides them with another tool they will need for their voyage: a satanic creature that is an amalgamation of stems and meat which they’ve termed a lotushead. Unbeknownst to Thomas, he is also a tool they will need for their voyage; the Buried Church has selected him to be the feast, so he is captured and shaved in preparation for the banquet. The crew flees the Caribbean when the city is attacked by vicious carrion angels—deadly, crow-like creatures which can possess any living thing—and they retreat to the ship, hotly pursued by the creatures. Aboard Toussaint’s ship, The Butcher’s Table, Gully threatens Martin’s life, saying that he must get him alone time with Alice so that Gully can ask her for a favor, and after pitiful struggle on Martin’s part, he obliges. Toussaint meets up with the ship of the Buried Church, letting Abel and Alice aboard. Though Martin has to pretend not to know her in front of her father, he gets Gully his time with Alice, and unbeknownst to him, they plan to kill Thomas before he can be sacrificed and replace him with Gully. Gully has felt rejected all his life for being ugly, Black, and unlovable, and in being sacrificed to the devil, he sees a way for his body to be cherished and loved. In a private gathering, Abel, Alice, Martin, and Toussaint gather round a candle as Martin instructs them to keep quiet while he telepathically contacts a Black Box Monk for directions to hell. Martin retrieves the monk’s location, and once they find him, the monk will give them a detailed map of hell. In order to arrive at hell, they must perform a ritual with the lotushead. After cutting it, the creature screams in all the tongues of hell and transports them to the Dark Sea, from which they can traverse towards hell’s shores. Using the monk’s map, they arrive at the enormous skeleton of an angel, sailing straight into its skull, where the feast will take place. Everything is prepared, with Abel sitting at the head of the table and Alice and Martin at his side; directly across from him is a seat reserved for the devil himself. Thomas is brought out and they begin carving into his flesh, but Gully shoots him in the head, ruining him for a sacrifice. He implores that they use him instead, and as Abel rises to do so, Alice guts her father, ruining his hopes for the feast. It becomes a free-for-all, as Gully lunges at Martin and severs his tongue for all the lies he’s told. Gully approaches Alice to do the same, when they’re suddenly attacked by the Black Law—the undertakers of the underworld—and struck by friendly fire from Toussaint’s attempts to defeat them. Though Alice has lost her legs from the knee down, she crawls over to Martin, cutting him open and consuming him. In horror, Gully flees from hell using a lifeboat from The Butcher’s Table and returns to the normal world. For days, he wades the middle of the ocean, using every iota of strength he has. Finally, Gully—the sole survivor of the trip—arrives at the Gulf of Mexico, where his decayed body is eaten by flies and other insects, finally granting his wish of consumption.
