Two friends, a middle-aged woman and an old man, plan out a visit to the old man's home in Philadelphia around Halloween. He's stuck in a nursing home and desires company. They reminisce over his time as her creative writing teacher in college and their old classmates. He's quite crotchety. Eventually, they walk through the snow for some dinner before he starts drinking. At the Mexican restaurant they end up in, the woman sees her ex-husband, who she'd thought was in Santa Fe. They have an awkward conversation. The woman notices that her old teacher's foot is bleeding and she faints. He dies a few months later, but not before belittling her and her inability to write lately.
