Plot Summary
Kelly is exploring an abandoned "zone," where all the houses have been left by their previous tenants. He is a "scrapper", meaning he will go into these homes and gut them for resources. Today, he enters a blue home and does the same sort of thing he's done one hundred times: cutting the wire cable out of the walls, unscrewing the door hinges and knobs, taking anything valuable that he can.
When he opens the door to the basement, though, he realizes he isn't alone when he hears a young boy crying out. He investigates and finds the boy chained to a mattress, a bucket of piss nearby. The walls are lined with other mattresses and blankets, effectively soundproofing the room. Kelly unchains the boy and puts him in his truck. At certain intervals he has to leave the boy -- first, in the basement, to get his saw to get the boy free, and second, in the truck, so he can gather up the rest of his supplies. Every time he leaves, the boy begins to cry again, worried he is being abandoned again. Kelly takes the boy to the hospital, where he hopes he will be safe.
