In the 1920's Prohibition-era US, Lorna Grant and Vix Beller possess the ability to heal people of traumas by extracting their emotions during intimacy or sex. They become a couple and develop a cult-like following for their ability to heal people. They collect and illegally re-sell the strong emotions, in the form of drugs, to an increasingly blank and soulless America. After being "healed" by the couple, wives are compelled to leave their husbands, and their stolen emotions are sold elsewhere.
Their illegal dealing leads a sheriff, Hank Yarley, and a mob of men, to chase the couple in the hopes of retrieving their wives' stolen emotions. In the shoot-out, Lorna intentionally pours a bag of desperate love on her pursuers, and that massive outpouring of love transforms Texas for several years. The couple escapes, their fate a mystery.
