Petal McQueen and Aeshna are an unusual couple who regularly attract attention. However while Petal’s steam powered heart organs and glass body are odd, Aeshna’s face that had been spliced with dragonfly eyes and mandibles are usually the center of attention. Her ability to suck evil people’s souls and send them to hell also attracted more attention. But today, a man called Bald Head Man approaches to target Petal instead. Petal doesn’t know him, but Bald Head Man knows that Petal is 50 despite looking 30, and about Petal’s childhood polio that caused her to replace her organs with steam powered ones, one of which produces fertile soil. The fertile soil was valuable in the land that used to be called Chicago, that had been destroyed and left infertile. People could not grow their crops, so Petal sold her fertile soil to the people cheaply so they could grow food to eat.  Bald Head Man demanded that Petal work for his boss, the notoriously powerful man called Hanged Man. Petal refuses, but Bald Head Man insists, and tries to threaten them with a gun. Aeshna leaps into action with her lightning speed and slaps the gun away, drawing his eyes to hers so she could use her dragonfly eyes to suck his soul.  With Bald Head Man dead, the couple begins leave the bar they had worked at for years to avoid more of Hanged Man’s men who would surely follow. But before they leave, they decide that this was their place, and they would not flee scared. They stay and wait for the Hanged Man to arrive to suck his soul next.
