Plot Summary
In 1920, a small town sweets shop owner, Greek-American Bill Barbalis, takes in a stray dog and names him Duboko. Bill’s upstairs neighbor, a doctor, observes the dog’s peculiar behavior as he grows up. Duboko makes a name for himself by always appearing where a large group of people gathers in town, except for at the rival sweets shop owned by the Klugge brothers. Bill’s old father, Spiros, also moves into town upon the death of his wife, and the three settle into a harmonious lifestyle. In 1923, the doctor and Bill receive invitations to a KKK meeting in town, and they attend to witness the nonsense. Bill gives a speech shaming the members and there is never another meeting in town, but he later begins receiving anonymous hate messages from an “Anti-Greek League” threatening him to leave. He gets news that one of his cousins has pneumonia, so he goes to meet him in a nearby city, but that night the doctor awakens to the sounds of Duboko barking. He looks out his window to see men kidnapping Spiros Barbalis, and immediately calls the police and then gets out to chase them in his car. Duboko also runs after the criminals, and the two follow them to the dump. The doctor doesn’t even have a chance to act before Duboko is on the five men in white hoods, taking them all down until they have no choice but to flee in their car. Even then, Duboko won’t give up the fight, and the men run him over when they leave. When Bill returns the next day, he’s heartbroken by the loss of Duboko. The criminals are obvious from the bruises and bite marks on them, and two of the culprits are the Klugge brothers. Bill throws them through their window and they leave town soon after. The town holds a military funeral for Duboko, and the doctor has the odd feeling that Greek ghosts are hanging around nearby.
