Violet, a sophisticated middle-aged woman, visits the house of her ex-husband Seth and his new wife Cindy. Violet and Seth divorced sixteen years ago, and though Cindy was once Seth's secret girlfriend, the two are now married and have two children of their own, half-siblings to Violet and Seth's children Grace and Evan.
The whole family gathers to welcome Evan home from his two years in Prague and to meet his new wife and their baby. This is also Violet's first time meeting Cindy, and she is very conscious of her high-pitched voice and over-bearing nature, as she is of her ex-husband's drastic aging. Violet feels bad for Seth, who looks at her with what she interprets to be misery and self-pity, as Cindy scolds him and the children laugh at his ignorance of current pop-culture. Violet makes clear to herself, however, that she does not want him back, and though her instinct is to defend him, she remains silent for most of the gathering and dinner. Violet thinks to herself how much happier Seth would be if the two of them were still married, but as her ex-husband looks at her with what seems to be regret, Violet remembers that this new life is entirely his own doing.
