In a Jewish temple, a young man watches a group of Jewish scholars pray in a time of need. The Jewish scholars are praying to God, but one man named Mattathias decides to pray to the Golem. The Golem is a mythical creature made of clay that in mythology has helped protect the Jewish people in times of crisis. The other scholars admonish the man and declare he lacks faith in God.
The scholars ask the young man to reason with Mattathias. The young man tries to help but has no success and leaves the temple in defeat. However, outside, the man witnesses uniformed men attack the passersby. Fear strikes the young man, and he finally understands Mattathias' desperation. Unable to stop the uniformed men, the young man begins yelling for the Golem to save them.
