Plot Summary
On a momentarily docked ship on the way to a Greek island near Tenos, a man and his wife Margaret hear an eerie bawling noise and try to find the source of the sound. They find a small donkey tied up and upset as he struggles to stand on the deck of another boat, which is wet and shaky due to the current storm. Margaret and her husband agree that the donkey is beautiful, feeling sympathetic for his difficult situation. As the ship sets sail again, the donkey continues to bawl, but its noise gets drowned out by other sounds. Margaret and her husband wonder where the donkey will be taken. They speak with a small old man who welcomes them to Greece and explains that he has been dreaming about returning to Greece for a while but has only been able to return now. He also mentions an old love who did not wait for him and married someone else, but he has never been married himself. The ship soon arrives at the island Margaret and her husband are moving to, and their luggage is loaded onto another donkey, which worries Margaret. A few days later, Margaret and her husband see the small donkey again, carrying dried mountain thorn for a baker. They say hello to the baker and note that the donkey’s eyes are sad but not afraid, and the load upon his back does not seem too heavy.
