Living in Brooklyn with his grandparents, Esteban dearly misses his father who moved to Puerto Rico years prior and left his family behind. The grandparents write a letter to his father, begging him to take Esteban into his care, but he callously responds that he doesn't speak English, rejecting all forms of America now that he's moved away.
For years, the only communication between Esteban and his father was through postcards, but out of the blue, Esteban comes home to find his grandparents on the phone with his father. The urge him over, saying his father wants to speak with him, but when Esteban picks up the phone, his father is cold. He tells his son that he's remarried, joking if he would prefer a baby sister or brother; when Esteban doesn't answer, he drunkenly answers his own question, saying he'll give him both.
Overwhelmed by his father's absence and his sudden reappearance, Esteban screams that he hates him and hangs up on his father. The grandfather angrily asks why he would do that, but overcome with emotion, Esteban curses him and his father in Spanish, running to his room in anguish over his deadbeat father.
