Barkley has gradually become alienated from his wife while she spends all of their retirement time away from him. Her detachments fills him with an aching loneliness. He is a man of simple routine, while she frequently prefers spontaneity, and excluding him from that spontaneity. Recently, Barkley’s wife has allowed her friend to stay at their house. Kate is couch surfing her at her friends’ places after the death of her husband. At the urging of his wife, Barkley lets Kate accompany him on his daily afternoon walk. They stumble upon an odd object in the sand. The two slowly encourage humor from one another, allowing each to speak their mind. Barkley says that he thinks the mysterious object is a mine from Nicaragua.
