Plot Summary
In the 1960s, a woman is getting married to her partner, Ezra, in Richmond, Virginia when his friend Felix walks in, with his date Abby. Even on their wedding day, she knows she is attracted to Felix but feels no remorse about any fantasy she entertains about him, since she and her soon-to-be husband practice new-age liberalism which allows for her to embrace her sexual desires. During their marriage, things quickly go sour because Ezra is dealing with mental health issues, and he soon decides that she should see a therapist as well. Eventually, this thought process evolves into Ezra outright blaming his wife for his sickness and the two separate. Though they attempt to reconcile, it is to no avail. Ezra files for divorce and she would come to find out she was divorced a week after the decision had been made legal. For some time she relished in her newfound single freedom, sleeping with people and choosing what to do with her life and time. Soon, she finds Felix again, who had been burned by Ezra as well, and a friendship blossoms between them, with Abby long gone. They begin an affair, and eventually, she goes to upstate New York to visit his place for a short period of time. The two smoke weed, have sex, and share enjoyable conversations. One night, after unprotected sex, they arrive at the subject of child-bearing, him asking her if she wanted to have kids with Ezra. She answered yes, but that he refused outright, unable to look past his own life in order to care for the life of another. She returns to her home in New York, thinking about the wedding blanket an aunt had gifted them, which they made love under multiple times. The child she had been tutoring informs her that she would be moving to Maine, so the divorcee prepares for yet another departure from her life.
