Plot Summary
Reney finds her pasture torn up and her beloved mule Rosalee missing one morning. She assumes the culprit was probably feral pigs or coyotes. She returns home and wakes her husband Wes, her high school sweetheart who recently lost his job and seems to be having a hard time finding his way in life. His efforts to become friends with the rich man down the road embarrass Reney, and his single-minded focus on his cattle, which he believes is keeping them afloat rather than Reney's hard earned tip money, grates on her.
At her job, Reney's boss Jack tells her not to be late, despite Reney working three times harder than the slacking high school students who otherwise run the café. Reney thinks of Wes and their relationship. They had fought during her senior year of high school but ended up back together after Reney's scholarship to UT Austin fell through. She had been pregnant twice but lost the babies both times, and the second time she decided to have her tubes tied — all without telling Wes. She thinks about how her dreams have always seemed out of reach.
At work, Wes doesn't show up to take her to school, so Reney gets a ride home with Jack, who seems to have taken an interest in her, often calling her into his office for meetings that turn into long conversations about her classes. In the car, he offers her a promotion, and money if she ever needs it, and says that he thinks she deserves better and wants to see her reach her potential. When they reach her ranch, Reney thanks him with a hug, but when she gets out, a jealous Wes is there, and behaves cruelly towards Jack. Jack goes to leave, and Wes knocks Reney to the ground. Spitting blood, she gets up, and Wes tells her that Rosalee is in the barn. She thinks about leaving, then and there, but finds that she can't. Instead, she goes into the barn.
Immediately, she notices what's wrong. Rosalee is torn up and bleeding heavily, likely injured by a coyote. Reney assumes she had been attacked while trying to protect a calf. Wes cries as he talks to Rosalee and tells her his plans to work things out. She ignores him, takes the gun from him, and puts Rosalee out of her misery.
Reney walks outside, takes the truck, and drives as far as she can. Then she gets out and walks, finally leaving like she wants to.
