Gordon Sills is in the middle of a divorce with Cordon and Avery Roda come into his office and ask him for his help on locating a woman.
The woman known as Anna is thought to have the answers of what happened to an important scientist named Mercer, who appears to have worked for both Cordon and Roda, who want to locate the woman so badly they are willing to get the FBI involved.
Gordon becomes enamored by the case, studying all the strokes of Anna's letters to Mercer. One thing that bothers Gordon is a lover's name has been carved out of Anna's letters. He deduces that she's a artist based on the strokes and reports this back to Roda and Cordon who are unamused with his results and essentially fire him, telling him that they've already deduced something similar.
Gordon, becomes almost obsessed with Anna and tries to track her down even though Roda, Cordon, and the FBI have had no luck. He goes to an Art Academy one day and finds the A on a painting. When he meets Anna who is only 20 years old, he realizes that time travel has been possible and that Mercer is the lover whose name had been cut out. Mercer had time travelled.
