Madeleine has just lost her mother to early-onset Alzheimers. Her father previously passed due to bowel cancer, and her friends have abandoned her in her grief, so she is navigating the process of mourning on her own. She decides to join a test group for an Alzheimers drug experiment. When she does, she starts having intense and vivid flashbacks to her childhood. She is assigned a clinical psychologist named Clarice to help her through the episodes. During one unusual flashback, Madeleine sees a girl from the window of her childhood home that she had never seen before. Clarice suggests she try talking to her. To go back, actively searching for the memory. Madeleine finds her, and discovers that her name is Zeinab. She cancels her next appointment with Clarice and instead searches everywhere for any record of a girl named Zeinab. Finding nothing, she visits the town she grew up in and reconnects with Zeinab in memory. Madeleine takes Zeinab through her memories and finds that she is good company. Thinking that her mind has conjured up a friend for her, Madeleine is shocked when Zeinab confesses that she thought she made Madeleine up in her mind. Though still confused as to the nature of their relationship (and Zeinab's existence), Madeleine is happy to have a friend. Clarice is concerned by this when Madeleine visits a month later. She suggests it's time for more "comprehensive care." From her hospital bed, Madeleine contacts Zeinab again in memory. Then she falls asleep, wakes again, and Zeinab is there. As it turns out, Zeinab was a member of the test group who had the exact same flashback episodes as Madeleine. She's become Madeleine's rights adviser, and got her discharged from the hospital. Zeinab kisses Madeleine's forehead, and she is gone, but Madeleine knows she is still with her.
