Plot Summary
Easter’s family has always relied on the angels to help them nourish crops and survive the horrific racism of the south.
As she gets older, she realizes the “angels” belong to the old Africa magic her ancestor learned in his days as a golden dog, before he became a human man, and they are far from angelic.
One day, she accidentally sets loose the thousands of angels helping her father maintain his fields, causing the crop to wither. Horrified, she makes a deal with the Devil to get them back, unsure what it will cost her. It turns out, Easter’s deal will cost her everything. When the Devil comes to collect, white supremacists attack Easter’s neighborhood, slaughtering every African American they see, including her family. Before she is shot to death, Easter’s mother, who she knows as Ma’am, tells her the second half of her family’s magic. As their ancestor once transformed from dog to man, they can transform into a dog – but the transformation is permanent. Easter will never be human again, but she will live.
Easter transforms as Ma’am and is shot to death by armed white supremacists. She joins Brother, who transformed into a dog many years ago, and together they live in the woods, surviving the massacre. A white family moves into their old home. The wife is upset by two dogs constantly sniffing around her property, so she asks her husband to shoot them. But when they examine the dead bodies, they find Easter and Brother with their faces blown off, once again in their human forms.
