Scarlett and Billy have been best friends and next-door neighbors since they were six years old. Now they are seniors in high school, and during a trip to the beach in their hometown of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, they kiss on the sand. A big storm arrives, and together they run back to Billy's house and make hot chocolate. Scarlett brings up the car accident and how it changed everything: Scarlett, Billy, and Scarlett's father died in a car crash; Scarlett and Billy are now in some sort of afterlife together. While they make the hot cocoa, they hesitantly talk about their kiss. They kiss again and hug one another. Billy takes Scarlett to the front porch of his house and asks her if she is ready to move on. He says Scarlett's dad is waiting for them. Scarlett says she is ready, but she needs to say goodbye to her mom and sister Francine. She returns to her house and watches her sister and mother eat dinner together. Francine feels Scarlett's presence in the room and begins to cry. Scarlett returns to Billy and they embrace.
