Plot Summary
After the death of their premature baby, Joel and Kim decide to move from San Francisco to Philadelphia, where Joel grew up. Kim grows more depressed and distanced, and Joel tries to coax answers from her without inciting his terrible temper.
On the day of the move, Kim tells him she wants to stay in the old house alone for three weeks. Dumbfounded but helpless, Joel agrees. He occupies himself in Philly by going on countless house tours with his real estate agent, Mrs. Brody. None of the houses are to his liking.
Kim calls one day and tells him she's going to spend some time with her sister in Arizona. She does not invite him along. Joel gets drunk and goes on one final house tour.
The property is in poor condition, but Joel feels a connection to it. He starts to imagine Kim and their family inside the house, but after a while, the decay and rot gets to him, and he feels unnerved. When he returns to his apartment, he rips up the agent's card, signaling the end of his house hunt.
