A man is discussing unreliable narrators with his friend when his friend mentions an excerpt from a story that the man had never heard of before. Upon further research, it’s discovered this place is only mentioned in certain editions of cyclopedias. The man then remembers a conversation with the father’s friend where he comes across a manuscript titled “Orbis Tertius.” This manuscript also serves as a cyclopedia that details the world of Tlön. Tlön is a world with a distinct language, sense of time, and culture. The culture and world is independent from science and things are allowed to be more fantastical. The world rejects materialism and determines that finding artifacts and relying too heavily on science can possess faulty logic. The world of Tlön is funded by a millionaire and is backed in false truths. However, the secret world has managed to intertwine with the present day. While people believe in it, the man notes that the world does not really transcend science. It is money that managed to work its way into society today and seem more important than science. In turn, the world has made room for Tlön’s deception.
