Plot Summary
Ankuin–the leader of a band of resistance fighters–wakes up in a cave with her head throbbing. While the cave and the surrounding forest seem real, Ankuin suspects she’s in an interrogation simulation. There’s a man in the cave with her whom she believes is her captor. He tells her that their ship was attacked by the Horizon Syndicate’s drone army while traveling across the planet Onerth and they crashed. Anukin can’t remember what happened, but doesn’t believe the man, who says his name is Henders. Ankuin is a daughter of the Rizul Tribe of Onerth, who refer to themselves as The People. The women among the tribe have the ability to meld minds with their mothers. When it comes time for Ankuin to merge with her own mother after her first menses, the ceremony goes awry. Ankuin experiences all of her mother’s memories, but after returning to her own body, her mother doesn’t wake up. The village banishes Ankuin to a cave for killing her mother. Jingula, the village elder, tries to heal Ankuin, but it doesn’t work. Ankuin discovers that she can fully inhabit other bodies. The Horizon Syndicate attacks Ankuin’s village. The troops find her chained up in a cave and the sergeant tries to knock her out and take advantage of her. But when he touches her, she jumps into his body and shoots the other soldiers. She returns to her village in the body of the sergeant and frees the remaining captives. Jingula is there among them and Ankuin reveals that it’s her inside the sergeant's body. She returns to the cave to save her original body, but discovers that she’s been shot. On the second day of her captivity, Ankuin starts to remember what happened. She and her crew were on their way to an important meeting when the ambush happened. Realizing that she is in the body of Meela, one of her crew members, Ankuin lies to Henders about her true identity. Ankuin helped found the resistance that fights against the Horizon Syndicate, which destroys civilizations for profit. She is known as the “Woman with No Face” because she doesn’t stay in one body for long. Ankuin decides to sleep with Henders. As they become more intimate with each other, Henders reveals that he knows she is one of Ankuin’s crew members. He confesses that he’s a Syndicate spy and needs to know where her leader is. Ankuin realizes that someone else must be pretending to be her. She remembers that she and her band of resistance fighters were making the journey to Bekagard on foot. She’d arranged a meeting with the Syndicate and was planning to kill the representatives who showed up. Even though she knows she’s in a simulation, she slits Henders’ throat. Ankuin wakes up in a ward. Henders appears in his true form, which is much older, and offers her a deal if she tells him where to find Ankuin. Ankuin says that the Syndicate should look for Jingula, an elder of the desert people. Henders admits that they have already killed Jingula and begins to celebrate his victory. He tries to sleep with Ankuin one final time and Ankuin jumps into his body.
