Before going to his 50-year high school reunion in West Alton, Pennsylvania, David stops at the local hospital with his wife, Andrea. There, he visits Mamie, a fellow classmate of his who collapsed before going to the reunion. Mamie’s likely on her deathbed, but she isn’t too afraid of what’s to come. She figures that she’ll live on, even when all of this is done. David hopes that’s true.
At the reunion, David is pulled aside to speak to a woman that he once knew, Elizanne. Although he doesn’t think much of her at first, at the end of the party, Elizanne comes up to David to thank him for having taken a walk with her one afternoon when they were sixteen where he gave her her first kiss. For weeks after the reunion, David can’t stop thinking about that walk and that moment that he’d forgotten about for so many years. Reflecting on what the end of his life will be like, he hopes to live forever in a time, not unlike that afternoon with Elizanne.
