A Jewish pawnshop owner sits in his pawnshop and dozes off during an autumn storm. He is awoken by the sound of the door opening and he sees a young girl who he knows does not live near him. She presents him a string of pearls and says that she only wants to have them borrowed so that she can get a loan. He informs her that they are fake and at most, worth forty dollars. She is silent and seems distressed. He inspects the necklace and sees that the beads are arranged in a certain order, noticing that it’s a rosary. He asks her why she needs the money and she breaks down and says that her mother told her they were real pearls. Crying, she asks for the beads back and knowing she must need the money desperately, he agrees to give her fifty dollars as a loan. She thanks him and leaves. He prays and asks God if he did the right thing.
