The professor credits the survival of his wife’s death to this poem: “Lycidas,” by John Milton. He spends days preparing, first encouraging himself and committing himself to teach this poem. Then, actually preparing the “lesson.” He recalls memories of a colleague and friend he envied and cherished, Hugh, and memories of his deceased wife, Alice. The lesson ensues and he struggles against his students, until the bell finally rings. By the end of it, the professor rereads the poem and knows that he has taken a step forward, towards life.
