Marilyn is a middle-aged woman living in contemporary suburban America with her husband, Sid. Marilyn and Sid have two adult children, Sally and Tom. When Marilyn tells her daughter, Sally, about Sid’s drinking problem, Sally’s social worker husband, Rusty, insists that they need to stage an intervention. Marilyn hesitates, but the added influence of Tom, who hears his father drunk on the phone one day, makes it so that the event must happen. Tom, Sally, and Rusty all come to their parents’ house, all while Marilyn remains incredibly nervous. She hopes that something will happen to prevent the intrusion on their lives.
Marilyn wants to avoid having an intervention because of her guilt about her past affair. Sid helped her recover after it, and he forgave her completely for her lapse. She thinks it's unfair to ostracize him for his small flaws. Eventually, they have the intervention, but Sid bats it off excellently. The kids drive away, and Marilyn and Sid laugh about it. They get in the car themselves to go on a little drive, and Marilyn vows just to focus on how Sid has helped her make the life she wanted.
