Plot Summary
In pre-Civil War Spain, a little girl named Consuelo praises her famous matador Uncle Felix. Due to his earned riches, the family, which includes Consuelo, her parents, her brother Manolo, and her Uncle Felix, live comfortably in the Street of Good Fortune. One morning, Uncle Felix asks Consuelo if she thinks he is superstitious, then denies it. He calls his fellow bullfighter Soldadito a superstitious and "ignorant gypsy" because he makes the “Sign of the Horns” to every bad omen he sees. However, Uncle Felix also praises Soldadito as the greatest matador of all. Consuelo is worried that Uncle Felix will die because of his talk of death. Consuelo’s father, Manolo, and Uncle Felix come back home after bullfighting in Pamplona during the summer months. Consuelo’s father angrily calls Soldadito a "crazy gypsy" and calls him unprofessional. Uncle Felix, on the other hand, says that Soldadito is great, and “most well acquainted with death.” Later, Uncle Felix tells Consuelo he was better than Soldadito in Pamplona, which frustrated Soldadito. Uncle Felix says he felt death close to him that day. Uncle Felix makes Consuelo swear she will never watch him and Manolo bullfight to prevent death from being part of the family. Then he dismisses what he says, asking Consuelo to forget the conversation. The next day, Manolo alerts the family that Soldadito died in Malaga that afternoon; a strong wind blew his cape against him, and the bull killed him. After attending the funeral, Uncle Felix comes home on Sunday morning, taking an hour-long nap before his last fight that afternoon. While her mother prayed during the fight, Consuelo waits for Uncle Felix’s return, truly afraid for him. Later, Consuelo's father tells her that Uncle Felix wouldn’t go near the bulls; another bullfighter had to kill the bulls for him. Her father asserts that he will be all right next time. Uncle Felix approaches Consuelo and says that he does not want to die. He says death is a friend to bullfighters and after seeing Soldadito die, he is scared of it. Consuelo wishes she were dead, but she knows Uncle Felix and she will not die for a long time. When Uncle Felix asks her if she thinks he will be great again, Consuelo lies and says that he will be great without needing death on his side.
