Plot Summary
When Bit gets kicked out of the shelter, he finds a piece of cardboard, writes "Anything Helps" on it, and heads to a street corner. A couple people hand him singles and a group of boys hurl both insults and coins at him. A man in a gold car stops and promises Bit $20 if he tells him what he's going to buy with the money. Bit tells him he'll buy the new Harry Potter book, but the man insists on the truth. Bit changes his answer to 'vodka' and the man leaves $20 in Bit's palm and drives away. Bit walks to a bookstore and buys Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He's nervous to go back to the shelter after Cater, the guy who runs the place, found out he bought two forties and kicked him out. He thinks of his wife, Julie, and how she overdosed. Bit walks to a neighborhood and stops at a house where two boys play in the backyard. He asks if Nate, his son, is there. The boys say he's inside, but Bit walks to the front door and is greeted by Mrs. Molson, Nate's foster mom. He tries to give Mrs. Molson the Harry Potter book, but she hands it back. She tells him these kinds of books are against the house rules. He convinces her to save it for Nate, even if he can't read it now, and walks away. Nate chases after him on his bicycle and Bit asks him about his life.
