Plot Summary
Kristin Loomis, the engineering director at a car company, is being interviewed by police. The police are asking about her coworker Dan, who was found dead at a bar. Kristin says that Dan was quiet, and that she had gotten promoted over him but he was a good sport about it. She explains that the Friday before, she had told Dan he had to work that weekend, and she had smelled alcohol in his breath and asked if he had been drinking. She also says that Dan left a handwritten resignation letter on her desk the day he died, saying that he needed to return to India.
The next interview is Vanessa, the receptionist at the company. Vanessa tells the police that Dan and his ex-wife divorced ten years prior, and that they came to an office Halloween party once but never came to a work event again. Vanessa also tells them that Dan and Charlie, another man who works at the office and whose son is in Afghanistan, had an argument on the Friday Dan died. Charlie says America needs a scorched-earth policy to end the conflict sooner, and Dan talks about innocent people being killed.
The next interview is Brad, the sales director. Brad says that Dan needed to loosen up, and that he was not director material. He says that Dan had a crush on Kristin, and that he once caught Dan looking at his ex-wife's facebook page. Brad said to him, "I thought you Hindu men knew how to keep your women in line." He also says that Dan had been getting sloppy with his work recently.
Next, the police interview Charlie, Dan's drinking buddy and the man he was arguing with about the war. Charlie says that Dan was not happy about having to work during the weekend, and that he had been working weekends a lot recently. He says that he and Dan went to the bar as usual Friday evening, and he left before Dan did. He also says that he once saw Dan's apartment, and it was just a mattress on the floor and a television, as Dan had never gotten around to furnishing it after the divorce.
The next interview is Nirali, Dan's ex-wife. Nirali says that Dan, or Dhanesh, his full name, was cut off from his family after marrying her since she was from a lower caste. They divorced because Dan did not want to move to a larger city, and she had applied for jobs in California. He refused to return to India, so she went to visit family alone.
Lastly, the police speak to Walter, a retired mechanic. Walter tells them that he went to the bar the Friday that Dan died to help his wife's cousin put in cabinets. When he was done, he sat down for a drink. He says that Dan, or as Walter says "a darkie fellow," bumped into him from the back and nearly made him spill his drink. Walter asked where Dan was from and if he spoke English, and if they taught manners where he was from. Dan moved towards Walter, who pulled out his handgun and told Dan to go back to his country. Dan grabbed Walter's gun and tried to get it off of him. The two men wrestled, and the gun went off and killed Dan. Walter insists he is not some racist like the papers are making him out to be, and that he needed to protect himself.
