Jeff Ford is a worker in a rural town in Western America. He takes the same route in to work each day where he passes an old Victorian home with a run-down sign that says “Word Doll Museum”. One day, he decides to stop in and finds an older woman named Beverly Gearing there. She had dreams of being a great historian, but was stranded there when her husband could not leave their farm. She became the last documentarian of Word Dolls, and old child’s distraction in the area. Beverly tells him about the False Face, a mask found in the area and believed to be the ghost tether of a phantom. She begins to tell him an old story of the Mower Manc, a mysterious finger which would roam the fields but nobody could ever catch, accused of destroying crops and murders. As she recounts the story to him, he realizes that nobody is curious about this deep history anymore. The next morning, he drives by the old museum to find that it has mysteriously burned down and Beverly stands before it looking like the False Face.
