A college freshman named Eugene and an older gay man named Kent find themselves together on the same train out of New York Penn Station after a weekend of partying. Kent is immediately attracted to Eugene who he assumes is gay because of the flamboyant way Eugene dresses. Eugene is aware of Kents flirtations, and although he does not does not feel the same, he goes along with allowing Kent to believe he is gay because he is uncertain of his own identity. After they reach their destination in Rhode Island, Kent offers Eugene a ride home, but ends up offering him a night cap at his house. They get drunk together and Eugene, feeling that having sex with Kent is an inevitable fact, lays down on the floor and waits for Kent to touch him. Kent begins undressing Eugene while Eugene has a flashback to himself at fourteen years old, when he was sexually assaulted by another older man. Refusing to let himself be used again, Eugene gets up and puts his clothes back on. On the walk back to his dorm, Eugene finally allows himself to understand that he is not gay, despite the assault from his childhood. He spends the rest of the evening talking with a girl who he has had a long crush on.
