Plot Summary
Mrs. Kimball boards a seedy cruise ship on her way to visit friends in Antigua after a long illness, and quickly contracts another sickness. Her roommate aboard the ship, Mrs. McNamara, is a helpful nurse, but incredibly overbearing and talkative. She is on the way to the Virgin Islands for a divorce, which reminds Mrs. Kimball of how she was on the verge of divorce with her own husband before her illness. To make matters worse, the ship’s doctor, Dr. Cortez, appears to practice black magic and constantly bothers Mrs. Kimball with his obsessive attention. Her condition improves when Mrs. McNamara leaves the ship, but Dr. Cortez continues to follow her around. Mrs. Kimball receives a telegram from her husband, which informs her that he’s flying down to join her in Antigua, which completes her recovery and allows her to see Dr. Cortez in a true light.
